Protecting teeth from grinding and wear
Many people clench or grind their teeth, often during sleep and without realising it. Over time this can wear down the teeth, cause sensitivity, and place strain on the jaw muscles and joints. An occlusal splint is a custom-made appliance, usually worn at night, that helps to protect the teeth and manage the effects of grinding.
Splints are also used to help assess and manage the bite before restorative treatment, and as part of the care of some jaw-joint and muscle concerns.

Assessing tooth wear
Where teeth have already worn, a specialist assessment can help identify why, for example grinding, acid erosion, or a combination, and how far it has progressed. Understanding the cause is important, because managing it is central to protecting the teeth from further wear and to planning any restorative treatment that may be needed.
How the treatment works
A splint is made from records and scans or impressions of your teeth, so it fits precisely and works correctly with your bite. Once fitted, it is checked and adjusted for comfort, and reviewed periodically. Your prosthodontist will advise on wear, care and how the splint fits into your overall dental care.
