What is gum recession?

If left untreated, this build-up can cause severe damage to teeth structures that can eventually lead to tooth loss.

Gum recession, also known as gingival recession or receding gums, is a dental condition characterised by the wearing of the gum tissue which exposes the root of the teeth.

While this condition is common to adults 40 years old and above, it can still happen to children and young adults.

What Causes Receding Gums?

There are several factors that can cause gum recession. Periodontal diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis can destroy bone and gum tissue that results to receding gums. Another cause is poor oral hygiene habits that make it easy for plaque to build up. Genetics may also be a factor in gum recession. If your relatives suffer from the condition, you may be susceptible to gum disease. Finally, aggressive brushing can damage the tooth enamel causing your teeth to wear and your gums to recede.

What is the Best Receding Gums Treatment?

To treat your receding gums, our expert periodontist would perform a gum tissue graft. A flap of skin is cut from the roof of your mouth and then grafted to the receding gums. Doing this procedure gives you several advantages.

  • Bring back the confidence in your smile
  • Reduce your pain when eating or brushing
  • Decrease your sensitivity to cold foods and drinks
  • Prevent your gums from receding in the future.
