A conservative way to restore worn or damaged front teeth
A veneer is a thin, custom-made facing bonded to the front of a tooth. Veneers can be used to restore teeth that are chipped, worn, discoloured or unevenly shaped, and to improve the appearance of the front teeth. They usually involve removing less tooth structure than a crown, making them a more conservative option where they’re suitable.
Veneers are often used as part of the restorative management of tooth wear and erosion, restoring the surfaces of teeth that have been gradually worn down, as well as for appearance-related concerns.

Planning your treatment
Because veneers change the appearance of your teeth, careful planning is important. Where appropriate, your prosthodontist may use a preview or “mock-up” so you can see and agree the proposed shape and appearance before any treatment begins. A mock-up is a guide rather than an exact copy of the final veneers, and the proposed result is discussed and agreed in advance. This planning stage means the proposed result is discussed and agreed in advance.
How the treatment works
Preparing teeth for veneers usually involves removing some of the tooth surface to make room for the veneer, so treatment is generally not reversible. A scan or impression is taken, and your veneers are custom-made to suit the shape, shade and character of your other teeth.
Your prosthodontist will discuss the benefits, risks and limitations, and the alternatives, so you can make an informed decision about whether they suit your situation.
This page is general information and doesn’t replace an individual assessment. All dental treatment carries risks, which your prosthodontist will discuss with you.
