Comprehensive care for complex dental needs

Full-mouth rehabilitation is the coordinated restoration of many or all of the teeth, usually where there has been extensive wear, erosion, decay, tooth loss or a combination of these. Rather than treating each tooth in isolation, the whole mouth is assessed and treated as a connected system, including the way the teeth meet, the health of the gums and bone, and the appearance of the smile.

These are among the most complex cases in dentistry, and are a core part of specialist prosthodontic training.

A carefully planned process

Full-mouth rehabilitation begins with a thorough assessment and detailed planning. The underlying cause of the problem, for example tooth wear, erosion or grinding, is identified first, because managing the cause is essential to a lasting result. Treatment is then staged and may combine several of the treatments described elsewhere on this site, such as crowns, bridges, veneers, implant restorations and dentures, alongside any other care a particular case needs, such as periodontal treatment, oral surgery, orthodontics or root canal treatment.

These cases are individual, and treatment is often carried out in stages that can extend over many months, and for more involved cases sometimes over a year or more, particularly where healing time, implants or interim restorations are part of the plan. Because of this, your prosthodontist will discuss the plan, the sequence, the likely timeframe and the options with you in detail before treatment begins, so you have a clear picture of what is involved from the start.

Expert Dental Care

Working as a team

Depending on what is involved, full-mouth rehabilitation can draw on the skills of several disciplines, for example periodontics, oral surgery, orthodontics or endodontics, alongside the restorative and prosthodontic work, and close communication with your own general dentist. The prosthodontist often coordinates the overall restorative plan and works with whichever practitioners a particular case calls for, whether they are colleagues at the practice or the patient’s existing dentist and specialists. What matters is that the care is planned as a connected whole and delivered in a well-coordinated sequence.
